The elderly prepare for influenza with vaccines

12 / 12 / 2011

Most of us, 40 % of the population is preparing for the flu period with vitamins – according to a current survey made by Szinapszis Ltd. on behalf of WEBBeteg.hu.

80 % of the adult population is preparing for the influenza period in some way and it can be observed that their proportion is higher among women (83 %) than among men. As for age, it is slightly more typical that it is rather the elderly who think of prevention.

4 of 10 inhabitants take food supplements in this period, 23 % of them try to eat more fruit and vegetables, and similar (22 %) is the proportion of those planning to have a vaccine given.

It is the elderly who plan to have a vaccine given

By age it can be observed that while vitamins are trusted by the young, vaccines are trusted by the elderly, typically those with chronic diseases. Above the age of 65 the proportion of those planning vaccination is nearly 50 %, while under the age of 45, at the young a similar proportion can be found in the case of food supplements.

Apropos of the two ways of protection it is worth mentioning that at vitamins on the basis of income and qualification a more significant difference can only be seen in the case of the latter (the proportion of those taking them is lower among those with primary education), while vaccines were mentioned by those with higher qualification and income.

Nearly one tenth of the population – typically men – try to protect by layering their clothing.

About the research

In November 2011 Szinapszis Ltd. examined the population’s attitude about the topic with a telephone survey. 1029 people filled in the survey, which was a countrywide sample representative by age (18+) gender, region, and settlement type.
